'Just completely different' 59-year-old BCT graduate reflects on the experience
September 14, 2020 — Fifty-nine-year-old Marine and Army Reserve veteran, Staff Sgt. Monte Gould graduated from Basic Combat Training with the 1st Battalion 34th Infantry Regiment Aug. 27, making him the oldest individual to complete this version of the BCT (but not the oldest to complete BCT ever. In 1999, a 68-year-old entered Basic Training). Not only did Gould complete BCT, but he finished in the top 10 percent of his training cycle. In partnership with the Djiboutian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, the 443rd CA BA was able to assist the veterinarian for Damerjog, Djibouti, in providing livestock care for the people of the remote Djiboutian desert village, which is roughly 15 miles from Camp Lemonnier... 404th Paratroopers Conduct Airborne Operations with Focus on Safety
August 20, 2020 — The 404th Civil Affairs Battalion conducted a large-scale airborne operation here on Aug. 14, 2020 with a focus on safety and ground support. As airborne operations continue to build, the drop zone detail sets the stage. Before parachutes fill the open sky, the drop zone detail calculates wind speed, knots, and distances. The detail uses red balloons to measure wind gusts and time their deployment from the ground to a wind ceiling, which reaches 1,200 feet in the air. "Safety is paramount to an airborne operation, and that safety comes from the dedication and professionalism of all participants," said Chief Warrant Officer 5 Michael A.
