Command Sergeant Major of the Army Reserve

As the 15th Command Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army Reserve Command, Betty is the principal enlisted advisor to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Reserve Command, and other senior Army leaders on regulations, policies and quality of life issues related to nearly 178,000 Army Reserve Soldiers.

Prior to this selection, Betty served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Deputy Commanding General (U.S. Army Reserve).

Command Sergeant Major Gregory Betty began his career with the United States Army in April 1988. He completed Basic Training at Fort Dix, N.J., and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Va. Throughout his military career, Command Sergeant Major Betty has served in every enlisted leadership position, from Team Leader to Command Sergeant Major. He has also served as Senior Logistics NCO, First Sergeant, and Operations Sergeant.

Other previous assignments include Command Sergeant Major of the 88th Readiness Division; Command Sergeant Major of the 100th Training Division (Leader Development), 80th Training Command (Total Army Schools System); Command Sergeant Major of 1st Brigade (QM), 94th Training Division; and Command Sergeant Major of the 8th Battalion (PS) 98th Regiment. Also, 1st Brigade, 94th Training Division, Charleston, W.Va., 8th Battalion, 98th Regiment, Fort Dix; 411th Engineer Brigade, New Windsor, N.Y.; 1/309h Regiment, Fort Dix; 2/310th Regiment, Fort Dix; and 146th Quartermaster, Fort Totten, N.Y.

He earned a master’s degree in organizational leadership from American Military University, VA, and earned his bachelor’s degree in management information system from Iona College, NY. His military education includes Primary Leadership Developmental Course, Basic and Advance Noncommissioned Officer Courses, Total Army Instructor Training Course, Small Group Instructor Course, Unit Mobilization Course, First Sergeant Course and Battle Staff Course. Command Sergeant Major Betty is also a graduate Non-Resident Class 39, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, and the Nominative Leader Course.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2), Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (4), Army Achievement Medal (3), National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (with numeral 6), Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi) and Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait).

Command Sergeant Major Betty is currently employed with New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority as a Senior Director within Construction and Development. He is a native of Kingston, Jamaica. He is married to Donna and has three wonderful children: Gregory Jr., Ryanne and Geordan. They reside in Valley Stream, N.Y.
