Army Reserve command teams meet to enhance readiness efforts

Julio Alvarez, command sergeant major of 3rd Battalion, 348th Training Support Regiment, 177th Armored Brigade, takes in remarks shared between briefers and attendees during a New Command Teams Orientation held at 85th Support Command Headquarters in Arlington Heights, Ill., May 19-20, 2017. The orientation gave battalion command teams and Brigade Support Element staffs assigned to 85th Support Command, but operationally controlled by First Army, a better understanding of the practices and procedures that make up the hybrid relationship between First Army and the 85th SPT CMD.

Command briefs new leaders on the way ahead for readiness requirements

Brig. Gen. Frederick R. Maiocco Jr., Commanding General, 85th Support Command, explains during a New Command Teams Orientation brief on May 20, 2017 in Arlington Heights, Ill. why it is so important to understand the unique partnership between the 85th SPT CMD and First Army. He shared that First Army is an “executive agent for training and training validation” in the Army. And the 85th Support Command is embedded as an operationally controlled element of First Army, and it is critical that we are synchronized to support that mission.

Army Reserve general helps honor high school seniors

Our Community Salutes, a not-for-profit organization, hosted it's yearly induction ceremony in Patchogue, N.Y. to honor high school seniors who have recently enlisted into the military.  Maj. Gen. Troy D. Kok, commanding general of the U.S. Army Reserve's 99th Regional Support Command, presents Samantha Braband, who has enlisted in the Navy, a challenge coin. In the background stands event organizer Bob Vecchio. Vecchio is chairman of Our Community Salutes Brookhaven Town Chapter and is also the president of the Board of Education for the William Floyd school district of Suffolk County, N.Y.

Military friendly employers recognized during ESGR luncheon

Brig. Gen. Jose R. Burgos, deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Regional Support Command, gives the keynote speech May 11 at the 10th Annual Freedom Award Nominee and Pro Patria Awards luncheon, hosted by the New Jersey Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.  Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the reserve components through outreach, recognition and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws, and resolves employment conflicts between the service members and their employers.

JBMDL’s Griffith Field House re-opens following $750K transformation

During the  re-opening ceremony for the Col. Jack H. Griffith Jr. Memorial Field House on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, Griffith’s widow Bonnie and daughters Barb and Megan check out a static display illustrating the field house’s history. The field house re-opened May 5 following a 5-month, $750,000 transformation. In addition to receiving a new gym floor and running track, the field house now features energy-efficient lighting and is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Col. Griffith served as Fort Dix chief of staff from March 1984 until his death from cancer in December 1986. He was commissioned as an Infantry officer through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at the University of Virginia, and was a graduate of the Army War College. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam where he was wounded in combat, and served in many other assignments around the world during his 26-year career.

Maj. Gen. Troy D. Kok, commanding general of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Regional Support Command, presents framed artwork from World War II to Claude Hodges, a 99th Infantry Division veteran who served during the Battle of the Bulge and is currently a resident at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Kok visited Hodges and other veterans at the center April 28.

Army Reserve command recognized for Superstorm Sandy relief efforts

Maj. Gen. Troy D. Kok, commanding general of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Regional Support Command (right), and Command Sgt. Maj. Al Almeida, 99th RSC command sergeant major, affix the Army Superior Unit Award streamer to the 99th RSC Colors during a ceremony April 21 at the command’s headquarters on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. The 99th RSC received the award for providing aid and assistance from October 2012 to April 2013 to communities in New York City that were devastated by Superstorm Sandy.
