Power in the Pines returned after a five-year hiatus with the Air and Space Open House from 19-21 May, 2023, at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. The ASOH is the largest public event held at JB MDL, showcasing air superiority from both the ground and sky. The flight line also displayed a variety of aircraft from many services of the military, as well as their guard and reserve components. These visuals served as a representation of JB MDL’s commitment to working with Joint Partners daily to support our national defense, and to thank the local community for its continued support.

Army Spc. Christian Ramos, 151th Quartermaster Detachment, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, serves as team leader for the air drop system, equipment and repair section. Once pallets are loaded on the aircraft, Ramos and the other riggers use strings and rubber bands to attach parachutes to static lines on both the left and right sides of the aircraft.

Army Reserve Chief Warrant Officer Denrick Mills, an air mobility warrant officer deployed to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, with the 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), said his favorite Black History story is the Triple Nickel “smokejumpers.” In 1945, the all-black 555th Airborne Infantry Battalion was ordered to Oregon to fight forest fires started by nature and by incendiary-bearing balloons sent into West Coast forests by the Japanese. “They used this airborne unit to jump in an put the fire out—that’s how the smokejumpers started,” he said.
