A good cause on hallowed ground
J. Don Reynolds, sculptor and artist, gazes at the Blue Jacket Recruit statue during a dedication ceremony conducted April 14, 2018, at Blue Jacket Park in Orlando, Fla. The Central Florida Navy League commissioned Reynolds, an Orlando resident who served in the Navy on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown, to design and sculpt the statue to honor approximately 188,000 women who graduated from Navy boot camp at Recruit Training Center Orlando from 1968-94. The statue stands next to one of the nation’s Lone Sailor statues that resides on the very ground where more than 650,000 men and women marched for their pass and review during graduation day.
