Sergeant William J. Rivers Posthumously Promoted

U.S. Army Reserve Command

The U.S. Army Reserve announces the posthumous promotion of Sgt. William J. Rivers to the rank of Staff Sergeant in recognition of his exceptional courage, dedication, and leadership during Operation Inherent Resolve. He tragically lost his life on Jan. 28, 2024, along with Sergeants Kennedy Sanders and Breonna Moffett, in Jordan.

Staff Sgt. Rivers enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 2011 as an Interior Electrician (12R). In 2018, Rivers completed a eight-month rotation to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, which is the U.S. and coalition mission to ensure the defeat of ISIS. Throughout his service, he demonstrated a deep commitment to his fellow soldiers and the mission.

“I am honored to announce the posthumous promotion of Sgt. William Rivers from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant," said Brig. Gen. Noel Palmer, 412th Theater Engineer Command Deputy Commanding General. "This advancement in rank is a recognition of his courage, honor, and fidelity in service to this great Nation. Though we mourn the tragic loss of Staff Sgt. Rivers, we hope this recognition provides some comfort to this family and shows our commitment to remember his legacy of loyal service.”
