U.S. Army Reserve supports Hurricane Harvey rescue efforts

By Capt. Chad Nixon U.S. Army Reserve Command

Four lives were saved by Army Reserve Soldiers from the 1-158th Assault Helicopter Battalion, Army Reserve Aviation Command during emergency evacuation operations from the City of Conroe, Sewer Water Treatment Facility, responding to the immediate needs of stranded employees due to rising flood water.

The road to sewer plant was flooded with rushing water making vehicle and boat rescue inaccessible. All local authority assets were unavailable for rescue, prompting local officials to contact the Army reserve for aviation assistance.

The Army Reserve answered an Immediate Response Authority request from Phillip Dupuis, Conroe Police Chief. This request for assistance mitigated human suffering in the area caused by rising floodwaters.

The 1-158 AHB responded to the request, utilizing the Army Reserve’s Immediate Response Authority, per the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, while providing trained and ready Army Reserve Soldiers for relief efforts.

The 1-158 AHB, utilizing one UH-60 Blackhawk launched with Conroe Emergency Medical Technicians and conducted an aerial rescue of four water treatment personnel.
