On February 28, 2022, the House of Representatives passed Senate Bill S.321. This bill awards the 6888thCentral Postal Directory Battalion (Six Triple Eight) the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Congressional Gold Medal. The Six Triple Eight was a WWII 855-member African American unit of the Women’s Army Corps (WACS), and the only Black WACs to serve overseas in Europe during WWII. They were a self-sustaining unit that improved troop morale by clearing a multi-year, multi-million mail backlog in record time. They are now the only female military unit to receive this honor. ARA Cummings was the national Citizen Advocate/Champion for this legislation.
