Inside The Brashear Conference Center at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia, stand a life-size photo of the late Master Chief Boatswain's Mate Carl Maxie Brashear and his diving suit he wore during U.S. Navy Diving and Salvage training in 1948. Brashear is a pioneer in the Navy's history, becoming the first African-American master diver and master chief. He was also the first person in the Navy’s history to be restored to full active duty as an amputee.
