New York City draftee Soldiers made history as the Lost Battalion in October 1918
The transcript of the German surrender note delivered on Maj. Charles Whittlesey, the commander of the 1st Battalion 308th Regiment , on October 7, 1918. Whittlesey was the ranking officer in a force of 540 men who had been cut off by German troops during an attack conducted by the 77th Infantry Division, a National Army division made up of draftees from New York City.
