U.S. Army Reserve assists sheriff's office after Hurricane Matthew
This park in downtown Kinston, N.C. was overwhelmed by floodwaters after the Neuse River crested its banks as Hurricane Matthew dumped nearly 11 inches of rain in early October. This park suffered severe flood damage, less than half a mile from the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office which also suffered flood damage in the basement of the courthouse. This was the third time the sheriff’s office flooded since 1996. The sheriff’s office reached out to the 81st Regional Support Command who owned an underutilized U.S. Army Reserve Center at the Kinston airport. Through the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012, U.S. Army Reserve Defense Support of Civil Authorities and Stafford Act (Disaster and Emergency Act), the sheriff’s office was able to use the facility to continue to serve the citizens of Lenoir County.
