The 729th TC supports Marines

By Capt. Fernando Ochoa 311th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary)

BELL, Calif. – Soldiers from the 729th Transportation Company, Fresno, Calif., traveled to Bell, Calif., May 6, to help support Marines from the 3rd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company by transporting wheeled vehicles and equipment to Operation Maple Resolve, which is being conducted at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, east of Edmonton, Canada.

Operation Maple Resolve is the Canadian Forces largest training exercise of the year. The aim of this operation is to not only get the troops working with their international counterparts, but to give them a taste of what life is like in an actual battle.

Staff Sgt. William Noel, 729th TC non-commissioned officer in-charge, took his squad down to Bell to conduct joint operations with Capt. Albert Perez, 3rd ANGLICO officer in-charge, to help transport 10 Humvees, two Humvee trailers and three Quadcon containers.

“Our mission is to give logistical operational support to the Operation Maple Resolve exercise and gain important real world experience,” said Perez. “We appreciate the help we are getting from the U.S. Army Reserve and will save more than a 100 thousand dollars of transportation cost.”

The 3rd ANGLICO is a fire support and liaison unit in the U. S. Marine Corps. The mission of this specialized unit is to provide Marine Air-Ground Task Force commanders a liaison capability, with foreign area expertise, to plan, coordinate, and conduct terminal control of fires in support of joint, allied and coalition forces.

Soldiers and Marines worked together all afternoon, loading the transport vehicles with Humvees and the equipment needed to complete the mission, working as a team.

This mission within a mission was an opportunity for young Soldiers and Marines to not only work in joint operations but to learn the skills that they will use during their careers, using two different kinds of vehicles.

The M-915 Line-Haul Tractor is used primarily in active and reserve component transportation units for the rapid, efficient transport of bulk supplies from ocean ports to division support areas within a theater of operation, while the M-872 Series 40-foot, 34-ton flatbed semitrailer, which can carry a wide variety of cargo with its large cargo bed on a three axle, has twelve-wheel suspension.

“We started our mission early this morning and drove down here with a close net convoy,” said Noel. “This gives our young Soldiers a chance to get drive time and an opportunity to work in a joint forces operation.”

The Operation Maple Resolve mission is to coordinate and enable the deployment, sustainment and redeployment of Allied Forces in order to set the conditions for the successful execution of exercises in a real world environment.

Once the transport vehicles were loaded, the vehicles were driven to the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Fresno, Calif., where they would be staged before heading to Canada.

The 729th Transportation Company is a proud member of the Transportation Corps, which is a combat service support branch of the U.S. Army and is headquartered at Fort Lee, Virginia.
