BG Sandra Alvey currently serves as the Deputy Commanding General (Operations), 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support), in Salt Lake City, Utah. She previously served as the Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer, medical civilian/military policy expert for the Defense Support of Civil Authorities Directorate of the Readiness, Training & Mobilization Office under the Office of the Secretary of Defense – Reserve Affairs, January 2013- July 2014. She served as the brigade level Commander of the 196th Medical Support Unit in Kaiserslautern (March 2011-January 2013), Germany, a unit that was expanding its mission to support foreign consequence management, Building Partnership Capacity operations and providing subject matter medical CBRN expertise to the JTF-FCM for USAREUR, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, and the 7th Civil Support Command . She has served a total of 27 years in the military, 10 years on active duty and 17 years in the Reserves. Her previous active duty assignments include: USACHPPM-PAC, Deputy Commander and Director of Technical Services, Sept 2007-October 2008; USACHPPM, Support Operations, April 2003-April 2004; 133D MED DET, Executive Officer, August 1994-April 1996; USAEC, Pest Management Program Manager, August 1993-March 1994; Preventive Medicine Officer, JTF Bravo Honduras, May-November 1991; AEHA, Medical Entomologist, Entomological Sciences Division, March 1990-August 1994. BG Alvey's other Reserve assignments include: serving as the 72B Reserve Component Consultant 2005-2007 and 2009-Present; Chemical and Biological SME, 20th Support Command (Army Reserve - Consequence Management Unit), 2009-2011; Medical Entomologist, USACHPPM-PAC DIMA, 2008-2009: Preventive Medicine Staff Officer, 804th Medical Brigade, 2005-2007; Medical Entomologist, USACHPPM DIMA, 1996-2007; Platoon leader, 143D Transportation Company 1988-1990.
In her civilian capacity, BG Alvey is an intelligence analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C. (2009-Present). Her other civilian assignments include serving as CHAIR (re-elected 2nd Term), DoD Armed Forces Pest Management Board, November 2006-November 2010; VICE CHAIR, DoD Armed Forces Pest Management Board, July 2005- Nov 2006 and spending the majority of her civilian career at the US Army Environmental Command, as the Senior Pest Management Consultant, March 2003-October 2008 with several initial contract environmental scientist positions through Horne Engineering, Dec 1999-Mar 2003; Environmental Restoration Company, Oct 1996-Dec 1999; and ORISE, May-Oct 1996. BG Alvey was also briefly assigned to the USACHPPM, Entomological Sciences Program (2008-2009) before expanding her medical entomology and environmental/public health career to include the intelligence community.
BG Alvey completed the Air War College, a Senior Service College military level of education. She completed Command and General Staff College, AMEDD Officer Advanced Course (RC), AMEDD Officer Basic Course, and Ordnance Officer Basic Course. BG Alvey entered the military as a 4-year Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship recipient and graduated from Western Maryland College in 1987. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps. Her advanced civilian education includes a Master’s degree in medical entomology from Georgia Southern University, acquisition certification, medical intelligence and intelligence community tradecraft skills.
BG Alvey is married to Alan and has three children; Douglas, a 1LT in the Marine Corps who is a combat engineer stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC; Gregory who is a senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA; and Samantha who is a freshman at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA.
