Brigadier General Walrath commissioned as an Infantry Officer from the United States Military Academy in 1989. Following a year at the Infantry Center, Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Battalion Scout Platoon Leader and later the Assistant S3. He then branch transferred to Aviation and attended flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Subsequent to aviation training he served as a UH-60 Flight Company Commander, Assistant S3 and later the Battalion S1, 1-52nd Aviation, Republic of Korea.
The balance of his active duty assignments include; Aviation and Brigade C2 Observer Controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana and Battalion S3 for 2-291st Aviation TSBn (Attack), Fort Hood, Texas. BG Walrath’s USAR assignments include: Aviation Battalion S3, Aviation Brigade Chief of Operations (OIF I), Deputy Aviation Brigade Commander, Aviation Battalion Commander, Aviation Brigade Executive Officer; Deputy Director, Communication Action Group, CJTF82, Afghanistan and Commander, 2nd Brigade, Southern Division, 75th Training Command.
Most recently, BG Walrath was a member of the Joint community serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, Joint Enabling Capability Command, Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. BG Walrath’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Combat Infantrymen Badge, Senior Aviator Wings, Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge and the Ranger Tab.
BG Walrath is a 1989 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. He is a graduate of the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania with a Masters Degree in National Security Studies. His military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Aviation Officer Basic and Advance Courses, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Advanced Joint Professional Military Education - Joint Forces Staff College and most recently the United Kingdom Joint Officer Planner Course in Northwood, England.
BG Walrath is an Army Aviator rated in the OH-58A/C, UH-1H, UH-60A/L, CH-47D, C-12D and UC-35A/B aircraft. Additionally, he is a former commercial pilot and holds an FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with various jet aircraft type ratings.
BG Walrath is a Wyoming native residing in Salado, Texas with wife Kathi, son Jake, daughter Olivia and retired bird dogs Jordan and Julia.
