98th Training Division

Brigadier General Tammy Smith is the Commanding General of the 98th Training Division (Initial Entry Training).

In this role, she is responsible for the oversight and direction of four brigades totaling 2,503 Soldiers throughout the east coast and Puerto Rico. The primary mission of the 98th TD is to provide Drill Sergeants to Army Training Centers. 

Brigadier General Smith was a 4-year Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship recipient and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1986. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps.

During her 30 year military career she has served as a Platoon Leader, 193d Support Battalion, Ft. Clayton, Panama; Logistic Support Detachment Commander, Task Force 36, Camino De La Paz, Costa Rica; Bravo Company Commander, 3-28th Infantry Battalion (Basic Combat Training), Ft Jackson, SC; S-3, 3-321st Infantry Battalion (Basic Combat Training), Clemson, South Carolina; Mobilization Planner, 99th Regional Readiness Command, Oakdale, PA; Secretary to the General Staff, 99th Regional Readiness Command, Coraopolis, PA; Readiness Staff Officer (DAMO-ODR), Department of the Army G-3, Pentagon, Washington, DC; Operations Officer, Office of the Chief, Army Reserve, Arlington, VA; Chief, Army Reserve Affairs, United States Forces- Afghanistan (USFOR-A), OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM; dual-hatted as the Chief, General Officer Management Office, Office of the Chief and as Director, Senior Leader Development Office, Army Reserve, Arlington, VA; Director, Human Capital Enterprise for the United States Army Reserve.

Prior to assuming command, she served as the United States Army Reserve Deputy Chief of Staff. 

Brigadier General Smith holds a Doctor of Management degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix. While there her research focused on executive leadership and senior leader transitions into new organizations. She also holds a Masters of Arts in Management from Webster University and a Masters in Strategic Studies as a graduate of the United States Army War College. 

Brigadier General Smith’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit Medal (one oak leaf cluster), the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medals (two oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Medals (four oak leaf clusters), the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Parachute Rigger Badge, and the Army Staff Badge. 

In her civilian capacity, Brigadier General Smith contributes to corporate and non-profit leader education programs and workplace diversity forums as an independent consultant. She is a member of the Deloitte Inclusion External Advisory Council and serves on the Out and Equal Workplace Advocates Board of Directors.
