Brig. Gen. Kathleen A. Clary

Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Reserve Medical Command

Brigadier General Clary was appointed Assistant Surgeon General for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs at the Office of the Surgeon General and Deputy Commanding General of the Army Reserve Medical Command on September 9, 2025. Prior to this role, she served as Deputy Commanding General of the 3rd Theater Medical Command, bringing three decades of clinical expertise and strategic leadership to the forefront of Army medicine.

A native of Tyndall, South Dakota, Brigadier General Clary currently resides in Seattle, Washington. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount Marty College, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Washington–Tacoma, a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Rush University. 

Commissioned as a Regular Army officer in May 1993 after graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the AMEDD Officer Basic Course, Brigadier General Clary began her career at Madigan Army Medical Center, serving as a surgical floor nurse and an ICU nurse following completion of the Critical Care Nursing Course. In 1999, she transitioned to the Army Reserve, joining the 6250th U.S. Army Hospital as clinical head nurse for the ICU, CCU, and Pediatric ICU. She was mobilized in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, leading the Adult and Pediatric ICU at Madigan.

Her career spans a wide range of leadership roles across the Army Reserve, including Mobilization Officer, CGSOC Instructor and Area Coordinator, Chief Nurse of the 328th Combat Support Hospital (CSH) and 330th Medical Brigade, Deputy Commander of the 452nd CSH, Commander of the 349th CSH and Commander of 2D Medical Brigade. Her deployments include Deputy Commander of the 452nd CSH at Camp Afrijan, Kuwait and Commander of the 3D TMC FWD DET in Kuwait. 

Brigadier General Clary’s military education includes the AMEDD Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Critical Care Nursing Course, Combined Arms Services and Staff School, the Army Command and General Staff Officer Course, and the U.S. Army War College. Her awards and decorations reflect her distinguished service and include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (5 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), National Defense Service Medal (Bronze Service Star), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (Silver Hourglass and “M” Device), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.

Brigadier General Clary is married to Colonel Seth Pedersen. They are proud parents of two daughters, Natalie and Rachel, and one son-in-law, AJ.
