Brig. Gen. Matt Metzel

Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, U.S. Army Reserve Command

Brigadier General (BG) Matt Metzel is the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7 for the U.S Army Reserve Command (USARC) at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. Matt received his commission from the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1994. He is a graduate of the Military Police Officer Basic Course (1995), Military Police Captains Career Course (2006), Command and General Staff College (2010), School of Advanced Military Studies (2011), Basic Strategic Art Program (2014), Defense Strategy Course (2015), Army War College Fellowship at Georgetown University (2017), Joint and Combined Warfighting School (2018), Common Faculty Development Instructor Course (2019), and the Senior Leader Development Seminar (2023).

BG Metzel’s previous assignments include: Platoon Leader, 984th Military Police Company, where he deployed to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Endeavor; Physical Security Officer, Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Washington D.C., where he mobilized in support of Operation Noble Eagle; Physical Security Officer, 65th Regional Readiness Command, Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico; Battalion Operations Officer, 535th Military Police Battalion, Raleigh, North Carolina, where he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; Global Force Management Planner and Assistant Executive Officer, U.S. Army Reserve Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Strategist, Office of the Chief of Army Reserve, Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Commandant, Readiness Training Academy, 83rd Army Reserve Readiness Training Center, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Director of Army Reserve Affairs and Director of Strategic Effects at U.S. Army Japan, Camp Zama; Director of War and Military Strategy-Reserve Component, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania; and Deputy Commanding General-Operations, 200th Military Police Command, Fort Meade, Maryland.

BG Metzel holds two Master of Military Arts and Science degrees from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (Military History) and the School of Advanced Military Studies (Theater Operations). In addition, Matt earned a third Masters Degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (seven awards), Army Commendation Medal (two awards), Army Achievement Medal (two awards), Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal (two awards), Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with two mobilization devices), Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Training Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (four awards), NATO Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, German Armed Forces Badge (Gold), and Japan Defense Cooperation Award.

Matt’s hobbies include researching nineteenth century military history, playing the piano, and spending time with his wife (Stephanie), three adult children, and five wonderful grandchildren.
