81st Readiness Division

Brigadier General Jed J. Schaertl assumed the duties as the Deputy Commanding General (Operations) for the 81st Readiness Division, U.S. Army Reserve, Fort Jackson, S.C. on September 1, 2023, after most recently serving as the Deputy Commanding General for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs, U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command, Wiesbaden, Germany.  

Brig. Gen. Schaertl was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers upon graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1991. He also holds a Master of Science (Engineering Management) from University of Missouri (Rolla) and Master of National Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He obtained his Professional Engineer (Civil Engineering) licensure from the State of Missouri. His additional military schooling and education includes Airborne School, Air Assault School, Jumpmaster School, Engineer Officer Basic Course, Engineer Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College, Joint and Combined Warfighting School – Hybrid and the U.S. Army War College.  

Prior to his most recent tour at U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command, Brig. Gen. Schaertl served in leadership positions with the 54th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Mechanized) and 10th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Mechanized), assistant plans officer for 82nd Airborne Division, assistant battalion S3 for 307th Engineer Battalion (Airborne), company commander for Alpha Company 307th Engineer Battalion (Airborne), observer controller team chief and battalion S3 for 1-345th Regiment (Engineer), observer controller team chief and battalion S3 for 2-345th Regiment (Combat Support), advisor to the chief of staff and assistant division commander, 2nd Iraqi Army Division, Mosul, Iraq; brigade plans officer and brigade S3 for the 157th Infantry Brigade, battalion commander of the 391st Engineer Battalion, chief of internal review for the 81st Regional Support Command, deputy commander and brigade commander for the 2nd Brigade, 98th Training Division (IET), commander of 368th Forward Engineer Support Team - Main (FEST-M), operations officer and deputy commander of the 98th Training Division.  

His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, seven Meritorious Service Medals, the Combat Action Badge, the Senior Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge.  

Brig. Gen. Schaertl is married with seven children.
