Brigadier General Leventhal was commissioned as a second lieutenant through Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. She is a graduate of the Adjutant General Officer Basic Course, Chemical Advance Course, Civil Affairs Qualification Course, Combined Arms and Service Staff School, Command and General Staff College, Army War College, and Senior Leader Seminar.
Leventhal holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Wesleyan University, a Graduate Certificate in Stability, Security and Development in Complex Operations from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Master’s Degree in Management of Projects and Programs from Brandeis University, and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.
BG Leventhal most recently served on the faculty in the Department of Command, Leadership, and Management at the United States Army War College as the John Parker Chair for Reserve Component Studies. Prior to that, she served as the State Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer (SEPLO) for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region III to the state of Maryland, and the G35 Future Operations Chief for Task Force 76.
BG Leventhal deployed to Iraq in 2005 serving as the Deputy Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW) at Logistics Support Area (LSA) Anaconda and deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as the Executive Officer for Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Nangarhar in Jalalabad. She deployed in 2013 to the United States Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya as the Regional Civil-Military Liaison Officer to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of State (DOS) from the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) in Djibouti. Her command experience includes a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) Company, the headquarters company for a Civil Affairs Battalion, and a CBRN Battalion.
Leventhal’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 1 Campaign Star, Iraq Campaign Medal with 1 Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War On Terrorism Service Medal.
