Brig. Gen. Nelson Rosen

Deputy Commanding General, Professional Services

Brigadier General Nelson G. Rosen, M.D. currently serves as a Professor of Pediatric Surgery and the Associate Director of the Colorectal Center at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. In addition to providing state-of-the-art health care and coverage at the Level 1 Trauma center, he addresses a full range of surgical conditions seen in children.

A native son of Philadelphia, BG Rosen grew up working in his father’s bakery. In 1989, BG Rosen earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical-electrical engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York. In 1994, he received his Doctor of Medicine from the Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

BG Rosen began his Army career in 1994 as a commissioned officer in the Individual Ready Reserve, while completing his General Surgery residency at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New Hyde Park, NY. He joined the 344th CSH as a General Surgeon in 2000, where he remained for three years. During this time, BG Rosen completed his fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Montreal’s Sainte-Justine Children’s Hospital. BG Rosen has deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 1st Forward Surgical Team, initially serving as a staff Surgeon in 2003 and returning to lead the unit from 2008-2009. BG Rosen has also deployed in command of the 3d Medical Command’s Operational Command Post Detachment 12, from 2014-2015, leading the senior medical command element for U.S. Army Central in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Freedom’s Sentinel, Resolute Support, and Spartan Shield. Both of these overseas commands resulted in Meritorious Unit Commendations for their respective units.

In addition to his deployments, BG Rosen has commanded the 804th, 338th, and 8th Medical Brigades. He has also served as 8th Medical Brigade Chief of Professional Services. BG Rosen is a graduate of the Officer Basic and Advanced courses, the Combined Armed Services Staff School., The Command and General Staff College’s Intermediate Level Education Course, and the United States Army War College. His individual awards include the Legion of Merit with 1 oak leaf cluster and the Bronze Star with 1 oak leaf cluster.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, BG Rosen is a member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Western Trauma Association, American Pediatric Surgical Association, Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Additionally, he is a member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, the Association of the United States Army; the Reserve Officers Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Jewish War Veterans of the United States. He is a proud Eagle Scout and currently serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 672, Montgomery, Ohio.

BG Rosen resides in Amberley, Ohio with his wife Jeanne, and their daughter and son.
