Brig. Gen. Walter M. Duzzny

Brigadier General Walter Duzzny assumed the duties as Deputy Commanding General of United States Army North (Fifth Army) and Director, Army Reserve Engagement Cell (AREC) on 4 February 2019.

He received his commission as an Infantry Officer in 1989 after graduating from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Brigadier General Duzzny’s military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses; the United States Army Command and General Staff College. He is also a graduate of the United States Army War College earning a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies.

His first assignment was as a rifle platoon leader in 3-502 Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (AASLT). He deployed with the 101st Airborne in August of 1990 for Operation DESERT SHIELD and participated in combat operations during Operation DESERT STORM. He next served as a ranger platoon leader and battalion training officer, in 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, GA. He commanded light infantry units at both the company and battalion levels; including Rifle Company Command of B Co, 1-5 Infantry, 25th Infantry Division and Battalion Command of 1148th Infantry, 37th IBCT. His last command assignment was as Brigade Commander, 1st BDE, ATL DIV, 75th TC at JBMDL, NJ.

Brigadier General Duzzny served in staff assignments through Corps and Joint Task Force level. These include the United Nations Command Security Battalion-Joint Security Area, Panmunjom, Korea; and 3-9 Infantry; 1st Brigade 25th Infantry Division; Aide-de Camp, Deputy Commanding General, I Corps, and Instructor, Army ROTC, The Citadel, Charleston, SC. He also served as CAT Chief, G33, United States Army Special Operations Command (Airborne), Fort Bragg, NC. While attached to 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Brigadier General Duzzny twice deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM where he served as the Deputy J5, Future Operations Planner and Chief of Staff for the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan (CJSOTF-A). Other assignments include Deputy J3, Joint Director of Military Support, Joint Force Headquarters - Ohio, and Joint Training Officer at USSOCOM.

Brigadier General Duzzny is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School, the Jumpmaster and Pathfinder courses at Fort Benning, GA and has earned both the Combat Infantryman Badge with star (2nd Award) and Expert Infantryman Badge.
