The U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Readiness Division hosted a Yellow Ribbon event Sept. 12-14 at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown. Rev. Dr. Paul V. McCullough III, Army Reserve Ambassador for Pennsylvania, served as keynote speaker for the event. Yellow Ribbon events span the deployment cycle - pre-deployment prep, mid-tour virtual check-ins and post-deployment reintegration - to connect families with vital resources, all backed by the program’s emphasis on family well-being. A U.S. Army fighter pilot, and one of the famed African American Tuskegee Airmen, Samuel G. Leftenant, 21, was involved in a midair collision while escorting bombers to Sankt Viet, Austria, causing him to bailout of his damaged aircraft. He was reported MIA on April 12, 1945 and declared dead in 1946, since he was never found. Leftenant-Colon, from East Norwich, N.Y., was a nurse with the Army Reserves. She was stationed with the Tuskegee Airmen in Columbus, Ohio, after her brother died, and worked there until 1949.
