Grothe was a United States Army Combat Engineer assigned to Bravo Company, 321st Engineer Battalion, who was killed in action while conducting route clearance operations in the area of Abu Bali, Iraq during the Global War on Terrorism, May 3, 2007. He was 21 years old.
