AGADIR, Morocco - U.S. Army Reserve Spc. John De Jesus – Torres, a survey team member with the 773rd Civil Support Team, 7th Mission Support command receives instructions in preparation to enter the ‘hot zone’ during a CBRN demonstration at the Port of Agadir, Morocco, Jun. 9, 2023, part of African Lion. De Jesus – Torres lead the joint reconnaissance team for the duration of the exercise. “Our role includes detecting and marking the contaminated area for the teams that come later to know where they should focus,” said De Jesus – Torres. “We provide feedback and photos of the area and our activities to the operations team so they can make the best decision for our next steps in responding to the event.” The 773rd is a technical HAZMAT reaction team, the only one of its kind in the U.S. Army Europe - Africa theater. Exercises like African Lion provide a venue to flex U.S. Army Reserve capabilities and demonstrate the integral role the Reserve plays in the success of unilateral military operations across the globe. 18 nations and approximately 8,000 personnel will participate in African Lion 2023, U.S. Africa Command's largest annual combined, joint exercise that will take place in multiple countries to include Morocco from May 13 - June 18, 2023.
