New York City draftee Soldiers made history as the Lost Battalion in October 1918
Major Charles Whittlesey, the commander of the 1st Battalion of the 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division who earned the Medal of Honor as the commander of 540 Soldiers made famous as The Lost Battalion. Whittlesey refused to surrender his command to surrounding German forces for six days until his men were relieved. (National Archieve)
