Brig. Gen. Marlene Markotan

Deputy Commanding General-Cyber, 335th Signal Command (Theater)

Brigadier General Markotan was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1991 after completing ROTC and graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her first assignment a􀀁er Signal Basic Officer Course was to the 485th Chemical Battalion as a Communications and Electronics Officer. In 1998, she was assigned as the Headquarters Detachment Commander for 392nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion and continued to serve in the Battalion as S-4, S-3, and Executive Officer culminating with relocating the unit from West Hazleton, Pennsylvania to Baltimore, Maryland. 

She led the 392nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion in 2009 and deployed with the 335th Signal Command (Theater)(Provisional) in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and served as the G-3 Projects Officer and Secretary of the General Staff. Upon redeployment, she served as the Internal Review Chief and Network Operations Center Chief for the 335th Signal Command (Theater).  In 2013, she was the Deputy Director Communications-Integrator with 335th Signal Command (Theater)(Provisional) in Kabul Afghanistan. She then went on to serve as Battalion Commander of 3rd Battalion, 80th Regiment in Scranton, Pennsylvania; Deputy G -6; Assistant Chief of Staff, G-6; for the 200th Military Police Command in Fort Meade, Maryland; and Assistant Chief of Staff G-6 for the Military Intelligence Readiness Command in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Brigadier General Markotan then commanded the 151st Theater Informa􀀂on Operations Group in Fort Totten, New York with follow-on assignments as the Command Senior Information Operations Officer for U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne) and G-3/5 Director for United States Army Reserve Command in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In June 2023, she was assigned as the Deputy Commanding Officer, Signal for the 335th Signal Command (Theater).

Her military education includes the U.S. Army War College, Functional Area 30 Qualifications Course, Brigade and Battalion Pre-Command Course, Intermediate Leaders Educa􀀂on Course, Internal Review Basic Couse, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Reserve Component Mobilization Planners Course, Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) Net Control Sta􀀂on Course, Signal Officer's Advance Course, and the Signal Officer's Basic Course. Her civilian education also includes a Master’s in Computer Science from Colorado Technical University, Master’s in Strategic Studies from U.S. Army War College, and Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  

Her awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal,  Meritorious Service Medal (4th award), Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), Army Achievement Medal (5th award), Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (10th award), National Defense Service Medal (with Bronze Star Device), Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War of Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and NATO Medal (2nd award). 

She is married to Tom Markotan, and they live in Newtown, PA. They have two daughters Megan and Rachel. Tom is the head of Research Operations and Environmental Health and Safety at NJ Bio in Princeton, New Jersey.
