Brigadier General Doug Cherry is the Commanding General of the 76th Operational Response Command. His career to date spans over 36 years of continuous service since his enlistment in 1983. Prior to reporting to the 76th ORC, he served as the Army Reserve Director of Force Management. He has held a variety of Command, staff and leadership positions from Platoon through Corps, including working on the DA staff, OCAR staff and Army National Guard Readiness Center staff. Additionally, he served as the water planner during the humanitarian mission to provide relief to flood victims in North Dakota. Doug had his first assignment in Force Development as the Force Integration Officer at the 94th Regional Support Command. He went on to represent the Army Reserve as the first Army Reserve liaison to the Army National Guard. He served as the SPO Planner for the 311th COSCOM before moving back to the National Capital Region as a Requirements Staff Officer at HQDA where, among other things, he was the Army’s Tactical Wheeled Vehicle Requirements Staff Officer responsible for such notable systems as the Up-Armored HMMWV and the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (MRAP). Doug was awarded the prestigious Pace Award by Secretary of the Army Pete Geren for leading the team that developed, built and fielded the MRAP; the system credited for saving countless lives and allowing us to turn the corner on the IEDs in Iraq. BG Cherry holds a BS and a MS from Montana State University and a Masters of Strategic Studies from the US Army War College. He is a graduate of the Quartermaster Officer Basic and Advance Courses, the Petroleum Operations Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Human Factors Engineering Course, the Army Force Management School, Command and General Staff College, the Defense Strategy Course, the United States Army War College. and most recently the Army Strategic Education Program – Basic.Doug deployed to Camp Eggers, Kabul Afghanistan, as the CJ-38, Chief, Requirements Division for NATO Training Mission - Afghanistan. In that role he served as the primary advisor for the draw-down of US and coalition forces to include NATO and partner nations as well as civilian and contractor support. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with silver oak leaf cluster; Army Commendation Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters; Army Achievement Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters and the Army Staff Identification Badge. BG Cherry also serves on a variety of community and volunteer organizations. He is a National Ski Patrolman and is a founding member of the Wounded Warrior Patrol. He has held various positions in ROA at the Chapter, Department and National level.
