83rd ARRTC welcomes new commander

By Patrick K Hodges Fort Knox news

Col. Kathleen Porter, 83rd U.S. Army Reserve Readiness Training Center commander, relinquished command to Col. Steven Egan during a change of command ceremony at Fort Knox's Waybur Theater May 3.

Following the passing of the unit's colors, symbolizing the transfer of command, Brig. Gen. Aaron Walter, who presided over the ceremony, described Porter's contributions during her time in command.

"When you look at the 83rd's accomplishments since Col. Porter took command in May 2017, it is clear that she contributed greatly to the Army Reserve training mission, the Fort Knox community and the growth and success of every member of this team," Walter said. "Under Col. Porter's leadership, the brigade has been recognized by its higher headquarters -- the 100th Training Division (Leader Development), the 80th Training Command and the U.S. Army Reserve Command as a crucial organization for overall Army preparedness."

He listed specific accomplishments to include training 5,000 students in fiscal 2017 and 11,000 in fiscal year 2018. He noted that Porter and her team greatly increased training support to the active component and Army National Guard in support of the One Army School System and more than doubled the brigade's support to offline training requests in fiscal 2017 and 2018. Porter also oversaw the creation of a fully mission capable Master Leader Course, the Complex Common Faculty Development Instructor Course, and the Company Leader Development Course. Simultaneously, she ensured the seamless realignment of the 83rd ARRTC under the 100th Division (Leader Development).

"Col. Porter's leadership resulted in the world-class training, education and professional development of more than 20,000 personnel to include both the active and Reserve component Soldiers, joint service personnel, Department of the Army Civilians and military technicians spanning units across the globe," Walter said. "It goes without saying that none of these accomplishments were reaped by someone who came into the unit with the attitude of 'it's just another day on the job.'"

Porter addressed several unit members specifically during her remarks, pointing out how their individual contributions contributed to the success of her command.

"It has truly been a distinct honor to be part of this command. I marvel every day at the professionalism, competence, care and character of our team, she said."

Walter expressed confidence in the brigade's new commander.

"The unit will be gaining a truly great leader in Col. Steven Egan," Walter said. "Col. Egan comes to the 83rd with an impressive resume and I've heard nothing but great things about his abilities from those who have served with him. I have no doubt that he will be an outstanding commander."

Porter addressed Egan and his wife, Danielle directly, welcoming them to the team.

"What a dynamic duo this command has been blessed with. I can't think of anyone more experienced, talented and poised to take the helm," Porter said. "This command will soar under [Egan's] leadership. This power couple, who is so down to earth, will take the brigade to new heights -- advancing the agenda of the Army Reserve and showing the great talent that resides in this command."

Egan began his remarks by thanking those in attendance and expressing his gratitude for his new command.

"I'm honored and humbled to be selected as brigade commander of the 83rd Thunderbolts. The legacy, history, and reputation of the fabled 83rd Division resonates loudly with the current members of the 83rd ARRTC," Egan said. "Your dedication and performance in being personally ready to support the Army's mission while providing the best quality military education is exceptional. It's exciting to be a part of the 83rd and their enthusiasm and professionalism."

Porter will remain at Fort Knox and serve as commander of the Army Reserve Senior Leader Development Office at Human Resources Command.

The 83rd ARRTC is the Army Reserve's primary schoolhouse for full-time support personnel and an accredited U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command "Institution of Excellence."
