U.S. Army launches first-ever Army Week in Boston

By Staff Sgt. Shawn Morris 99th Readiness Division

The U.S. Army kicked off its first-ever Army Week in Boston April 8 with an event at the city’s historic Faneuil Hall.

“On behalf of the people of Massachusetts, welcome to all the members of the Army for Army Week,” said Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. “I speak with gratitude for the men and women who currently serve in uniform, and for those who have served all the way back to the beginning of the nation.”

“Here in Boston, we have the utmost respect for our military men and women, and our veterans,” Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh said.

Army Week–Boston is a Total Army community outreach effort to connect the Boston community and its citizens with the Army they haven't met yet — including active Army, National Guard and Army Reserve.

“You will not find a more patriotic city than Boston, or a more patriotic state than the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” Maj. Gen. Gary Keefe, adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard.

“The Army Reserve has a strong presence here in Boston and throughout Massachusetts” said Maj. Gen. Mark W. Palzer, commanding general of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Readiness Division. “The Army Reserve is poised, positioned and ready to serve America’s citizens at home, and defend freedom abroad.”

The Army has more than 150 career choices available to the adventure-seeking, qualified citizens of the Boston area. More than 50 of these are in the healthcare field, and 99 percent of all Army jobs have related civilian credentials.

“The reality is that less than one percent of the American population serves in the armed forces today,” said Brig. Gen. Vincent Malone, senior commander at the U.S. Army’s Natick Soldier Systems Center. “Our Soldiers are our greatest asset.”

Army Week events across the city will include performances by Army Bands, such as the Six-String Soldiers and the U.S. Army Reserve’s 78th Army Band; aerial jumps by the Black Daggers, the U.S. Army’s Special Operations Parachute Demonstration Team; science and engineering equipment displays; and lectures by senior Army personnel at universities and the Museum of Science, just to name a few.

Make sure you stop by the Boston Common, Saturday, April 13, right after lunchtime to catch Army Band performances and see the Black Daggers jump in to the park! You can also see and feel some of the Army’s latest technology and gear at the Expo on the Commons.
