Army Reserve Soldiers honor black history pioneer
Maj. Gen. Mark Palzer, commanding general of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Readiness Division, presents a Meritorious Unit Citation to former Sgt. Hilda P. Griggs, who served in the Second World War’s 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-African American, all-female unit to deploy overseas during the war. The theme of this year’s Black History Month observance is, “Honoring the Past, Securing the Future.” The Department of Defense is commemorating the 75th anniversary of World War II by recognizing the contributions and sacrifices made by African-American service members.
