Army Reserve, UPS sign Private Public Partnership agreement

HAMILTON, N.J. — The U.S. Army Reserve signed a memorandum of understanding with United Parcel Service’s Bound Brook Division during a ceremony Dec. 8 at the UPS facility here.

The memorandum encourages UPS to recruit, select and hire eligible Army Reserve Soldiers, family members and veterans.

“One of the great attractions for UPS to hire Army Reserve Soldiers is what we bring to the company, such as leadership and discipline,” explained Maj. Gen. Troy D. Kok, commanding general of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Readiness Division. “What we get in return as an Army Reserve is a Soldier who is stable, a Soldier who is well taken care of 28 days throughout the month. A Soldier who has a good, stable job is going to be a great Army Reserve Soldier.”

“We are an excellent organization for veterans; the assets that they come with fit very well with us,” said Stephen Culley, manager of UPS’s Bound Brook Division. “We completely promote from within, so someone who’s coming in can quickly rise up with their military leadership skills.”

This signing supports the Army Reserve’s Private Public Partnership program, which establishes mutually beneficial relationships between the U.S. Army Reserve and private and public sector organizations to create opportunities for Soldiers to increase their readiness on the unit, leader, and individual levels, thereby enhancing their value to their families and communities and their readiness to protect and serve the American public.

“Our Army Reserve Soldiers and family members are hard-charging, and they’re going to bring those skills that they’ve learned in the military to the workforce,” said Maj. Lewis Newell, individual and unit readiness leader for P3 at the Office of the Chief, Army Reserve. “We hope to be able to put a lot of Army Reserve Soldiers into the UPS family.”

“America’s Army Reserve is a community based organization, and one of the great strengths of the P3 program is allowing our Army Reserve Soldiers to use their military education and experience to be able to get that job on the outside,” Kok said.

Headquartered in Atlanta, UPS serves more than 220 countries and territories worldwide with nearly 450,000 employees.

Partnering with companies like UPS helps America’s Army Reserve remain the most capable, combat-ready and lethal federal reserve force in the nation’s history.

“I’m looking forward to having this partnership and bringing more veterans aboard,” said Culley, who served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps.

“This is the first I know of that UPS has signed with the Army Reserve, and it is a win for the Army Reserve and a win for UPS,” Newell said. “This is the first step of hopefully many steps to get to that corporate partnership.”

“This is the beginning of what we hope is a great relationship between us and the entire company,” Kok added.
