A native of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, COL Newman earned his commission from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1992.
After graduating, COL Newman was commissioned as an Engineer Officer and assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. While serving in the 8th Engineers he deployed to Kuwait as a Platoon Leader in support of Operation Iris Gold, and later as an Executive Officer to Panama in support of Operation Safe Haven. After completing EOAC, he joined the 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of South Korea and served as the Assistant Brigade Engineer. After entering the Army Reserves, COL Newman was mobilized from the IRR in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served as the Brigade Engineer for the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (STRYKER) in Mosul, Iraq. After mobilization, COL Newman returned to the Reserves and completed Ordnance Officer branch qualification, serving in Logistics branch positions before returning to the Engineers to command the 844th Engineer Battalion in Knoxville, TN. In addition to battalion command, he has also held various staff assignments to include Distribution Integration Branch Chief and DCO for the 518th SUS BDE, Executive Officer for the 362nd QM BN, Plans Officer in the G4 Directorate at USARC, and was mobilized in support of COVID-19 as the Deputy SPO for the 377th TSC. Most recently, COL Newman commanded the 518th Sustainment Brigade in Knightdale NC.
COL Newman holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy, a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri, and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. COL Newman is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Schools, Command & General Staff College, and the United States Army War College.
COL Newman’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star Device, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge. COL Newman is also a recipient of the Bronze De Fleury medal from the US Army Engineer Association, and the Order of St Martin from the Association of Quartermasters.
COL Newman currently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina with his wife Lauren and daughter Clara. In his civilian occupation, he serves as the Senior Director of Operational Excellence for Merz Aesthetics.
