Command Sgt. Maj. John Hilton

Command Sergeant Major, 78th Training Division

Command Sergeant Major John Hilton attended Infantry OSUT in 1986 at Ft. Benning, GA as a heavy anti-armor weapons crewman, earning top TOW gunner and top ITV gunner. His combat tours include a 16-month deployment for OIF to Baghdad, Iraq during the surge in 2006-2008 as an NCOIC/Senior Enlisted Advisor of an embedded transition team for the Iraqi National Police. He has also deployed three additional times to Africa, Kuwait, and Afghanistan.

His first duty assignment upon enlistment was with the 3/16th Infantry, 187th Infantry BDE (SEP) and served as an infantryman, team leader, squad leader, and platoon sergeant. In 1994 he joined the 1/304th REGT, 76th DIV (later the 98th DIV) and served as a Drill Sergeant, Senior Drill Sergeant, Company Training NCO, Retention NCO, and First Sergeant. After his deployment for OIF, he served as the BDE Operations Sergeant Major with the 302nd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade at Westover AFB. CSM Hilton was appointed Command Sergeant Major in December of 2008 and was assigned to the 6/98th (MI) 100th DIV at Ft. Devens, MA. He then served as Brigade Command Sergeant Major of the 1st BDE (MI), 100th DIV at Ft. Huachuca, AZ. In 2015, he deployed for Operation Freedom Sentinel as an embedded liaison officer for the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti –part of CJTF-HOA. He deployed again with CALL in 2016 as a military analyst in the Kuwait and Afghanistan AORs supporting Operations Spartan Shield, Inherent Resolve, Freedom Sentinel and the Resolute Support Mission. In 2018, he served as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan (CSTC-A). In April of 2019, he assumed responsibility as the Brigade CSM for the 259th Expeditionary MI Brigade. His current assignment is the Division CSM for the 78th Training Division.

CSM Hilton’s military education includes: PLDC (Honor Graduate); Infantry BNCOC; Infantry ANCOC (Distinguished Honor Graduate); Drill Sergeant School; Company Trainers Course; Instructor & Small Group Instructor Courses; First Sergeants Course; Transition Team School at Ft. Riley, Kansas; Advanced Transition Team School at the Phoenix Academy in Taji, Iraq; Battle Staff NCO Course (Distinguished Honor Graduate); Senior Enlisted Joint PME; the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy; TASS Leader Course; BN & BDE Pre-Command courses; the Military Intelligence Brigade Pre-Command Course, and many other functional courses.

His Civilian education includes: A BA degree in Business Management (Summa Cum Laude); an MBA (dual major) in Strategic Leadership & Project Management; and a Graduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning from Norwich University.

CSM Hilton’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, and many other individual and unit awards. He is also a recipient of the Military Intelligence Corps’ Knowlton Award.

CSM Hilton has one adult daughter.
