Command Sergeant Major Tawanna M. Dawson enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in August 1989. She attended and completed both Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in June 1990 and was awarded the Military Occupation Specialty of Administrative Specialist (71L). In April 1992, Command Sergeant Major Dawson enlisted in the Regular Army and reclassified as a Finance Specialist (73C), Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.

Command Sergeant Major Dawson is a native of and resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with her husband, Walter. They have three adult children: one daughter, Jasmine (29) (spouse, Antwon, and one granddaughter, Ava (6 months)), and two sons: JeDon (21) and Julius (20).
