Many of you have asked me about my reading list. As an avid reader, there are just so many books that have influenced my leadership style, my mindset and my relationships – it wouldn’t do justice to just publish a list of books.

Instead… I'm excited to introduce you to the U.S. Army Reserve CG Book-of-the-Month Club! Every month we'll read and discuss a book that focuses on leadership, personal growth, or professional development.

You don't need to be a reading expert or have a lot of spare time to be a part of the club - all you need is a curious mind and a willingness to share your thoughts with others. Throughout the month, we'll post some highlights and questions about the book-of-the-month on X (formerly Twitter), using the hashtag #USAR_CGBookClub. You can reply, repost, or start your own thread, depending on your preference. Once we complete a book, we'll save it on the Reserve website as a reference before diving into another top-choice read that will help better inform the bright minds of America’s Army Reserve.

READY NOW! SHAPING TOMORROW …

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

By Dr. Carol S. Dweck

In "Mindset", Dweck introduces the concept of fixed and growth mindsets. Using a multitude of vignettes, she illuminates these fundamental beliefs about intelligence and talent that affect our behavior, learning, and success. She argues that a growth mindset, which sees challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, leads to higher achievement and fulfillment, while a fixed mindset, which views abilities as innate and unchangeable, limits our potential and resilience.

We Were Soldiers Once...and Young: Ia Drang - The Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam

by Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. Galloway

A classic book every leader should read! In November 1965, some 450 men of the First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was chopped to pieces. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War.

It Worked For Me: In Life and Leadership

by Colin Powell

It Worked for Me is filled with vivid experiences and lessons learned that have shaped the legendary career of the four-star general and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. At its heart are Powell's "Thirteen Rules" - such as "Get mad, then get over it" and "Share credit" - that introduce his principles for effective leadership: conviction, hard work, and, above all, respect for others.

Brief: Make a Bigger Impact by Saying Less

by Joseph McCormack

“Keep in mind, the person being briefed probably knows the material better than the briefer. As a BDE CSM, I provide guidance and a briefing rubric from the MICCC to ensure the briefer is brief, brilliant and gone.” Darrell M. from Facebook

This book tackles the impact of brevity in business. The mastery of BRIEF requires three awareness, discipline and decisiveness. You need to know why, how and when brevity can save you, your ideas and your business from getting tuned out. Learn about McCormack's B.R.I.E.F. approach, which stands for Background, Relevance, Information, Ending, and Follow up, to help us simplify complex communication.
