CAR message: Furlough updates through chain of command

October 03, 2013

To all Army Reserve Soldiers, Civilians and Families,

As a Soldier, husband, and parent, I know each of you and your families are affected by the government shutdown in different ways. It pains me that we reached the point where we have to take actions that cause such personal hardship for you and your families. I want to let all of you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
All of our civilian employees are critical members of our team and the emergency furloughs are in no way a reflection of the importance of your work. Your dedication is inspiring to me and I thank you and your families for all that you do for our nation. I also want our Citizen-Soldiers to know how troubling it is to me to have to delay your Battle Training Assemblies until further notice. All of my actions are unfortunately necessary in order to comply with the directives provided to me.
It is important that we provide you the most up to date information necessary to care for your families. All of you will continue to receive updates through your chain of command as to when you will be able to return to duty. Until funding is restored our active duty military members will provide the minimum staffing to sustain our Army Reserve.
We are in a historic period for our nation and it is terrible that such severe measures have been taken that so deeply affect our civilian work force, Soldiers, and our families. Please know that I have the highest respect for each of you, for your service, and your commitment to America’s Army. I ask you to stay Army Strong and we will get through this together.
Twice the Citizen!
