80th Training Command (TASS)
Brigadier General Richard J. Torres was selected and assigned as the Deputy Commanding General of the 80th Training Command (TASS) on 25 May 2013. Prior to this assignment he was the Assistant Division Commander – Support of the 80th Training Command. As the ADC-Support he provided leadership and oversight to the commands 14 primary training centers located across the United States to include Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
As a third generation Soldier, he was born and raised at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and entered the Army in 1981. In 1982, he received his commission in the US Army Reserve as a second lieutenant in the Infantry and went on Active Duty four years later as an Aviation Officer. Brigadier General Torres deployed overseas to Korea and after Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991, he came off active duty and returned to the U.S. Army Reserve.
He has held numerous command positions at various levels both on active duty, with the North Carolina National Guard, and in the U.S. Army Reserve. Brigadier General Torres has a history of training soldiers that started as an Infantry Training Officer with the 108th DIV, an Aviation Observer Controller Trainer with the 80th Maneuver Training Command, and finally as a mobilized Battalion Commander for a Combat Support, Combat Service Support Training Support Battalion with the 78th TSD. He has held duties and responsibilities while in a combat environment as a commander and as an Army aviator from general aviation support to aviation special operations, and he has also held various primary staff positions.
His military education includes the Aviation Officer Basic Course, the Officer Rotary Wing and Aviator Qualification Course, the Aviation Advanced Course, the Combined Arms Service Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College. He has a bachelor's degree in computer science from East Carolina University, a master’s degree in business administration from Webster University, and a master's degree in strategic studies from the Army War College.
His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with one bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal, the Aviator Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.
As a Citizen-Soldier, Brigadier General Torres is the Senior Manager of Product Operations for Progress Software Corporation.
