SAMC inductee focuses on helping other Soldiers become members

I, Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Gilpin, 7th Battalion, 95th Regiment joined the United Sates Army Reserve in 2000. I joined because of financial difficulties, and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I joined as a human resource specialist and I worked in that capacity for a while. Later I wanted to do something different, so I became a chaplain’s assistant, which is very rewarding because I impact so many lives.
Now I’m an instructor, and one of the greatest experiences of being an instructor, which I enjoy, is that you meet people from all walks of life. I enjoy being upfront with them, I enjoy leading them, and I enjoy making sure that I give them the best that I have.
Here I am being inducted into the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and it makes me look back at the things that I didn’t think that I could do. Now I can go back and motivate those that don’t think that they can do certain things, like become a member of the SAMC.
Preparing for the board I was able to look within me to take that one step forward and push myself to the limit. If you put your heart into it you can do it. I had school; I had a fulltime job and a family, so the circumstances were a challenging. It’s all about how you take on the challenge and how you approach it. If you put your mind to it you can do it.
It’s rewarding because not everyone can do it. You’re going to be one of the few that’ll make a difference. The United States is a great country, and to be part of the Army Reserve is an honor. When you join an organization like the United States Army, you’re making a difference.
