 For 17 years, the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy prohibited openly homosexuals, lesbians and bisexuals individuals serving in the military. But “as of Sept. 20, service members will no longer be forced to hide who they are in order to serve our country”, stated our Commander in Chief, Mr. Barack H. Obama, the day he certified, along with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, to the Armed Services committees of the United States Congress that our Service members are ready for this change.  Without an advanced communication technology the Army cannot operate and be successful in all their missions. The Signal Corps is the one that answers that call by using highly sophisticated communication equipment to accomplish all the Army’s missions.  Over 80 highly motivated Soldiers gathered together on July 27, 2011 for the 1st Physical Fitness Challenge hosted by 166th Regional Support Group at the Maxi Field at Fort Buchanan.  On two separate ceremonies, the 35th Expeditionary Signal (35th ESB) and the 448th Engineer Battalions (448th EN BN) received their incoming Battalion Commanders.  On July 29th, 2011, the 166th and the 210th Regional Support Groups convened for the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club Board (SAMC) on Fort Buchanan, PR. Five sergeants from both RSGs were examined to be nominated for the 1st Mission Support Command Board (SAMC) that will be conducted on August 31st, 2011.  Four female soldiers from the First Mission Support Command had a taste of what is like to be in the show business. In commemoration of the International Women’s week (6-12 March 2011), several important Puerto Rican media outlets showed great interest in getting to know the female Soldiers assigned to the command.  The 346th Transportation Battalion and the 471st Engineer Company competed for the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence (AAME), Phase two. This is a very demanding Department of the Army (DA) competition, which took place 28 Feb thru 4 March 2011.  Members of the 475th Engineer Company recently completed their post-mobilization training at Fort McCoy, Wis., preparing for a deployment to support Operation Enduring Freedom.  Representatives from the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) visited the First Mission Support Headquarters, Saturday 12 Feb. 2011. U.S. Navy Captain Robert Benet and U.S. Army Colonel Jaime Lugo came to Puerto Rico with the intent of receiving input from recent deployed units, about the mobilization process.  Leaders from different subordinate units to the 1st Mission Support Command, participated in the Company Team Leader Course, offered by the Army Reserve Readiness Training Center, Leadership Education Division team. Five instructors came to the 1st MSC from Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, 24-28 January, to conduct the training.  On February 16, 2011, 2LT’s Jorge Baez and Freddy Sanchez were sworn in as Citizens of the United States.  Under a beautiful blue sky and with a comfortable weather, 160 Soldiers from the 475th Engineer Company received farewell from friends and relatives..  Family members and friends from the 210th Regional Support Group, celebrated on Sunday 23 January, as 57 Soldiers received the coveted Welcome Home Warrior-Citizen Award.  In the spirit of “One Army, One Team” and in the spirit of “Taking Care of Army Families, the Fort Buchanan Casualty Assistance Center (CAC), the Fort Knox, Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Operation Center (CMAOC)  In a promotion ceremony celebrated at the 1st Mission Support Command's Ramos Hall, Fort Buchanan on Jan 22, a very proud Lt. Col. Pablo Soto was promoted to colonel.  The 276th Ordnance Company arrived at Camp Buehring Kuwait Sept. 1, after completing a successful mobilization at Fort Dix, New Jersey.  Soldiers of the 346th Transportation Battalion welcomed their newest commander Jan. 22 during an assumption of command ceremony conducted at the Roosevelt Roads Army Reserve Center.  The 512th Transportation Detachment returns from Iraq.  The 1st Mission Support Command held its Awards Banquet Oct. 30 where Units, Soldiers and Civilians were recognized and presented with awards from the Department of the Army, the US Army Reserve Command and the 1st MSC, for their performance and achievements in different categories.
