Overview
The 5th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, is a General Support Aviation Battalion (GSAB) consisting of an HHC, one CH-47D (Chinook) Medium Lift Company, and one UH-60L (Blackhawk) Combat Aviation Company (CAC) and one HH-60L (AA) Medical Evacuation Company (MEDEVAC), as well as a Aviation Unit Level Maintenance Company (AVUM) and a Forward Support Company (FSC). HQ 5-159th, HHC 5-159th, B 5-159th, D 5-159th and E 5-159th are co-located at Fort Eustis, VA. A 5-159th and F 5-159th are located in Clearwater, FL. 5-159th also retains ADCON of B Company 1-214th (CH-47D), which is currently deployed, but is based in Fort Lewis, WA.
The 5-159th Aviation Regiment is the largest and most geographically dispersed subordinate Command under 244th Aviation Brigade. It's GSAB structure provides for the full organic support of aviation maintenance, mess, refueling, flight operations and wheeled vehicle support.
The Battalion consists of a mix of Active Guard/Reserve (AGR), and Troop Program Unit (TPU)Soldiers as well as Department of the Army Civilian Employees and Contractors.
Mission
On Order 5-159th Aviation Regiment (GSAB) trains, mobilizes and deploys to a directed theatre of operation to provide general aviation support to the ground commander in the form of medium lift, command and control and MEDEVAC rotary wing operations that support his combat, combat support, and combat service support needs across the full spectrum of military operations.
