The Army Reserve unit Maj. Nidal Hasan was supposed to join in Afghanistan left for the combat zone before dawn Friday, a month after three of its members died in the shooting rampage at Ft. Hood, Texas, that he is charged in.
Maj. Hasan, a military psychiatrist, remains in a military hospital in San Antonio. He has been charged with murdering 13 people and wounding 32 others, including six from the unit, the 467th combat-stress-control detachment. He hasn't yet responded to the charges.
The 467th Medical Detachment prepares to deploy toAfghanistan at Fort Hood, Texas, Friday. Nearly a fourth of its soldiers died or were injured in the shooting.
Several reservists volunteered to replace their dead and wounded comrades, so the unit, the first reservist mental-health workers to deploy to Afghanistan, left at full strength, Army officials said.
