A New Year's Wish from Iraq

White Plains, New York
Story by Dwight D. Worley

Many people in the city are thinking of Capt. Michael Sanchez this New Year's weekend. And, a world away, fighting a war, he's still thinking of home.

"Please wish White Plains a Happy Holiday and a Happy New Year, from a proud community member," Sanchez, an Army Reserve officer, wrote in an e-mail to The Journal News.

Sanchez, a social studies teacher at Highlands Middle School in White Plains, was sent to Iraq as part of the 323rd Military Intelligence Battalion in May and is scheduled to return home in the spring.

He sent his New Year's message after an encounter with Dave Price, the weather anchor for CBS' "The Early Show." Price is visiting troops in Iraq as part of Stars for Stripes, a group that provides entertainment to troops in the war zone.
