Derby Duty

Twenty years ago, a nine-year-old Cub Scout from Jetmore, Kansas named Casey Fitzgerald made a little racing car from a block of pinewood with some help from his dad. Casey painted his car gold, added some two-tone brown stripes and the number 3, and raced it in the 1989 Dodge City Cub Scout Pinewood Derby, where he finished in third place.

On Saturday afternoon, a little member of Pack 168's Wolf Den named Alex Fitzgerald leaned over a table in the U.S. Army Reserve Armory and sanded down his own pinewood racing car.

Alex's dad, U.S Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Fitzgerald, is a lot bigger than he was when he raced old Number 3 to Cub Scout glory 20 years ago. Not only is Fitzgerald a soldier and a father, he's also Pack 168's den leader — and on Saturday, the sergeant had his hands full.
