FOB Salerno, Afghanistan — It was "ortho day," the day Afghans with orthopedic problems can come to this U.S. military base for medical help.
When Staff Sgt. Jonathan Kowalski and Senior Airman Brett Randall opened the ambulance doors they found a man who broke his kneecap in a motorcycle accident two months earlier and a soldier who suffered a wrist fracture in a military vehicle rollover.
That the two men were about to be helped by medical personnel in the Milwaukee-based Army Reserve 452nd Combat Support Hospital was testament to the kindness and generosity of Americans.
It was also their luck and good fortune that they were about to get care that, for the most part, is not available to a majority of people living in this poverty-stricken country.
