The 4th ESC held their 2016 Best Warrior Competition

By Capt. Jose Caballero 4th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas – On Feb. 19-21, Soldiers of the 4th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) participated in their annual Best Warrior Competition, here. Each year, the unit receives the best warriors from their subordinate brigades with the goal to identify who will represent the unit at the 79th Sustainment Support Command Best Warrior Competition.

Six Soldiers, along with their sponsors, participated in the competition. Only four Soldiers completed the event. Two of the Soldiers, one noncommissioned officer and one Soldier will be competing at the next level.

“Sponsors are there to motivate and guide the Soldiers, they also help identify what needs to be done so the Soldiers improve and competes.” said Sgt. 1st Class Marques Lee, 4th ESC noncommissioned officer in charge of the event.

The competitors completed the Army physical fitness test, consisting of pushups, sit-ups and a two mile-run, a land navigation course, a six mile ruck march, weapons qualification, Soldier board interviews, written exams, written essays, warrior tasks and battle drills.

“This competition is more than physically challenging, there are mental challenges the Soldier has to fight through psychologically.” said Lee

Preparing for the completion as a reservist requires a lot of focus and sacrifice of personal time. Training during the one weekend a month will not be enough to take home the prize. “Being a reservist and having a civilian job makes preparing difficult, but I fit in time for training and reading when I could, to prepare for the competition.” said Spec. Olney Cameron, competitor and Soldier of the 350th Human Resources Company, 300th Special Troop Battalion, 300th Sustainment Brigade.

The 4th ESC would like to see more Soldiers participate in the competition next year. “In the reserves we really don’t get the opportunity to do all of these great things on a regular basis unless you are chosen or volunteer for these types of events,” said Staff Sgt. Hector Suarez competitor and noncommissioned officer with the 851st Transportation Company, 319th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 211th Regional Support Group “Soldiers are scared to participate because we don’t get the training but if we implement the training and have more events like these, that would be outstanding.”

Soldiers that compete in the Best Warrior Competition gain confidence and take back knowledge to their units.

“I will go back to my unit with more confidence, help others that would like to do this and in couple of years possibly be a sponsor for someone,” said Spc. Bryan Hernandez competitor and Soldier with 79th Quartermaster Company, 373rd Combat Sustainment Support Brigade. “We get to use technical skills we don’t use very often and just put them to work.”

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Hector Suarez and Spc. Matthew Nunez both Soldiers of the 851st Transportation Company, 319th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 211th Regional Support Group earned the NCO and Soldier 2016 4th ESC Best Warrior titles.

“I am so proud of you, I know you will do great at the next level,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Larry Johnson the 4th ESC MSE command sergeant major.

The mission of the 4th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) is to function as an operational command post for a Theater Sustainment Command (TSC), providing operational-level command sustainment support. Leads, plans, coordinates, synchronizes, monitors and controls operational-level logistics within an assigned Area of Operation.
