The 314th CSSB conducts Best Warrior Competition

By Capt. Fernando Ochoa 311th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary)

SLOAN, Nev. – Master Sgt. Melinda Barnes, 314th Combat Sustainment Battalion logistics noncommissioned officer in charge, organized and conducted a Best Warrior Competition for her Soldiers at its headquarters and Nellis Air Force Base Jan. 9.

The Best Warrior Competition is an annual competition overseen by the Department of the Army as a means of identifying and recognizing Soldiers in active, special operations, National Guard and Army Reserve components of the United States Army.

During the three-day competition, participants are tested on their Army aptitude, conquering urban warfare simulations, board interviews, physical fitness tests, written exams and Warrior tasks and battle drills relevant to today’s operating environment.

“As senior leaders, this is an opportunity for us to train and mentor junior enlisted and young noncommissioned officers,” said Barnes. “We only needed two Soldiers, but we had three Soldiers who wanted to compete.”

The winner of this event will go on to compete at the 650th Regional Support Group level, then on to the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command level. The ultimate goal is to make it to the Department of the Army level.

Spc. Matthew Litke, Spc. David Montes and Pfc. Antonio Araujo endured the Army physical fitness test, consisting of pushups, situps and a two mile-run, maneuvered through a land navigation course and hiked a six mile road march.

“It was fun and a great experience, but I still have work to do. I feel honored to have competed,” said Litke. “It is an amazing feeling, but I couldn’t have done it without my sponsor.”

The purpose of the Best Warrior Competition to provide units an environment conducive to conducting multi-echelon collective training and to provide an assessment specific to achieving the training readiness aim points, preparing Soldiers for entry into the available force pool.

The mission of the 314th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is to provide mission command of all assigned and attached units of the Combat Sustainment Support Battalion as it operates logistics hubs of supply, transportation and maintenance support to the Sustainment Brigade and supported Brigade Combat Teams.
