ASF Olathe receives ROA’s Outstanding USAR Aviation Support Facility Award

By Capt. Matthew Roman 11th Theater Aviation Command

NEW CENTURY, Kan. - Aviation Support Facility (ASF) Olathe received the 2014 Reserve Officers Association’s (ROA’s) Outstanding USAR Aviation Support Facility Award. Key civilian staff and military leadership received the award from Maj. Gen. David Conboy, USARC Deputy Commanding General of Operations, at a ceremony at their New Century, Kansas facility Oct. 19.

While addressing the ASF staff, Conboy added “I could never be more excited to be here today recognizing an outstanding achievement by some of our finest soldiers and civilians.”

The Outstanding USAR Aviation Support Facility Award is intended to recognize the top ASF in the U.S. Army Reserve and ASF Olathe edged out the other 16 ASFs to earn the 2014 crown.

The award criteria included ratings from the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) Aviation Resource Management Survey (ARMS) inspection, ratings of all ASF flight instructors in their annual standardization flight evaluations as well as other considerations including various safety measures and the ASF’s overall ability to support the wartime missions that their aircraft will support.

“Keep upping that standard because that’s what it’s all about, getting better every day,” said Conboy.

The staff of ASF Olathe supported the U.S. Army Reserve’s training and fielding of its newest Chinook helicopter, the CH-47 F model all while maintaining a partial fleet of CH-47 D models to meet the ongoing operational training and deployment requirements.

“I am thrilled at how well you all have presented the Army and Army Reserve,” added Conboy.

ASF Olathe is located approximately 25 miles south of Kansas City. Its hangar, shared with the airfield’s air traffic control tower, is located on an old World War II naval base that was later renamed New Century Air Center. It is now an industrial airport that is also home to the tenant aviation units, Bravo and Delta Company, 7th Battalion 158th Aviation Regiment.

ASF Olathe is one of the 17 ASFs under command and control of the 11th Theater Aviation Command (TAC). The 11th TAC is the only aviation command in the U.S. Army Reserve and has over 4200 soldiers, 700 civilians and 190 aircraft dispersed across 13 different states. The 11th TAC has two missions, functioning as both a warfighting headquarters and as a functional command. As warfighting command, the 11th TAC provides command & control, staff planning, and supervision for two aviation brigades and one air traffic service battalion. As a functional command the 11th TAC provides command and control for all Army Reserve Aviation.
