Capt. McCoy trains 650th RSG military police at Ft. Irwin

By Capt. Fernando Ochoa 311th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary)

FORT IRWIN, Calif. – Capt. Monty McCoy, 650th Regional Support Group force protection officer, lead a squad of 650th RSG military police to the Fort Irwin National Training Center to undergo mandatory law enforcement training July 20.

The Fort Irwin National Training Center is a major training area for the United States Military and is a census-designated place located in the Mojave Desert in northern San Bernardino County, California and is located 37 miles northeast of Barstow, in the Calico Mountains.

This military police training followed a 68 Tasking Course that included instruction in First Aid, Use of Force, Area Security, Riot Control, Apprehension of a Subject, Collection Evidence, Conduct Traffic Stops, Search and Seizure methods among others.

“Completing this training supports the 650th Regional Support Group peace time and conflict missions by providing sustainment operations and maintains a Military Police Section that is capable of executing or overseeing Force Protection, and Law and Order operations in the 650th RSG,” said McCoy. “Also, this training will prepare us for an upcoming exercise we will support later this year.”

The Military Police remain the force of choice because of the combat force multiplier that they bring to the battlefield and their transition capability to Law and Order Operations.

The Director of Emergency Services helped arrange the dates of training and approved the training that would be performed. A training schedule was made and coordinated with staff elements to establish required sustainment and mission support requirements.

“The Fort Irwin National Training Center serves both Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers, and we are happy to have them,” said Capt. Daniel Avila, Fort Irwin Guard Force Chief. “We train all types of Soldiers and we like to say, ‘We connect the American people with the American Army.”

These military police courses, which include many hours of classroom instruction, helped establish a relationship with the Fort Irwin Provost Marshal, who would sign off on any certification, and foster a continued combined Military Police effort and forge future installation mission support opportunities for the 650th RSG MP Section.

The Military Police Corps is the uniformed law enforcement branch of the United States Army. Investigations are conducted by Military Police Investigators or the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command, both of which report to the Provost Marshal General. Since the beginning of the Global War on Terror, military police have become a valuable asset to combat operations due to the versatility of the military occupation specialty.

“The best part of this training was watching my Soldiers perform their duties and the hands on practical experiences. Law enforcements skills are perishable if not maintained and my Soldiers used the equipment that they required to operate and developed an understanding between the difference of theory and practical application,” said McCoy.

The 650th RSG is aligned under the 311th Sustainment Command and took control of three battalions: 314th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 469th CSSB and the 483rd Transportation Battalion. Its area of operation spans over three states, including California, Nevada and Arizona.
