Command Sergeant Major Luther Thomas Jr.

Command Sergeant Major of the Army Reserve

Command Sergeant Major Luther Thomas, Jr. is a native of Laurinburg, North Carolina, and a 1984 graduate of Scotland High School.  After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army and completed Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Throughout his military career, Command Sergeant Major Thomas has served in numerous active duty and reserve component assignments to include positions of leadership as a Drill Sergeant, 3d Battalion, 2d Brigade, 108th Training Command; Drill Sergeant Leader, 108th Drill Sergeant School; Senior Basic Rifle Marksmanship Instructor, 7th Brigade, 108th Training Command; Operations NCO, 3d Battalion, 3d Brigade, 108th Training Command; Deputy Commandant of NCOES, 3d Battalion, 3d Brigade, 108th Training Command; Logistical Operations Sergeant Major, 356th Quartermaster Battalion, 3d Personnel Command; Brigade Operations Sergeant Major, 207th Regional Support Group, 143d Expeditionary Sustainment Command; and Group Sergeant Major, 310th Adjutant General Group, 143d Expeditionary Sustainment Command; Senior Enlisted Advisor, Regional Advisory Division Kabul; Brigade Command Sergeant Major, 4th Brigade, 75th Training Division (Battle Command); Command Sergeant Major, 75th Training Division (Battle Command), and Command Sergeant Major, 84th Training Command.  

Command Sergeant Major Thomas’ military and civilian education includes Primary Leadership Development Course, Drill Sergeant School, Infantry Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course, Infantry Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officers Course, Sergeants Major Academy (Class 55), Command Sergeants Major Course, Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education Course, the Transition Training Team Course and the National Defense University Keystone Course.  He holds an Associate’s Degree from Midlands Technical College, a Bachelor’s Degree from North Carolina State University, and a Master’s Degree from Touro University International.

Command Sergeant Major Thomas has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I, Operation Enduring Freedom VII & VIII, and also served on Task Force Katrina.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medal, six Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, six Army Reserve Component Achievement Medals, National Defense Medal w/Bronze Star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/M and Silver Hourglass devices, Non-Commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon w/Numeral 4, Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Ribbons, NATO (ISAF) Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Drill Sergeant Badge.

He is married to the former Deloris Wheeler of Mayesville, South Carolina, and they have a daughter Sarah.  They currently live at Fort Myer, Virginia.
