MG Daniel Dire

Commanding General

MG Daniel J. Dire was born in Anaheim, California. He was commissioned as a 2LT in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1980.  He completed his premedical studies at Missouri Western State College in 1980, and his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine in 1984. He completed a Residency Training Program in Emergency Medicine at Darnall Army Hospital, Fort Hood, Texas in 1987, where he served as Research Director and then Residency Director all while on active duty until 1991. He completed Board Certification in Emergency Medicine in 1988 and in the subspecialty of Pediatric Emergency Medicine in 1994.

MG Dire has held numerous leadership positions including Chief, EMS, and Flight Surgeon, 94th General Hospital; Chief, Professional Services, 44th Evacuation Hospital; Acting Commander 810th Field Hospital (HUH); Det 2 OIC, 94th General Hospital; Commander, 810th Field Hospital (HUH); Commander, 2291st U.S. Army Hospital; Commander, 5501st U.S. Army Hospital; Commander, 5th Medical Group; Commander, Task Force Med Eagle, Operation Joint Forge, Stabilization Force 13, Bosnia-Herzegovina; Commander, 139th Medical Group; Commander, Task Force Medical Falcon XIV, Kosovo Forces 9; Commander, 330th Medical Brigade; Deputy Commanding General, 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support); Deputy Commanding General, 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support).

 

MG Dire has completed the AMEDD Officer Basic and Advance Courses, Combat Casualty Care Course, Army Infantry Airborne School, Army Flight Surgeon Course, Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College on active duty as a Senior Service Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin.

 

His military awards include the Legion of Merit with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Silver and 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with 1 Silver Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M3 device and Silver Hourglass, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon (4 awards), the NATO Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Flight Surgeon Badge, the Basic Parachute Badge, and the Army Superior Unit Award with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster. He has been awarded the Surgeon General's “A Designator” in Emergency Medicine and has been inducted into the Order of Military Medical Merit.

 

In his civilian career, MG Dire is a Clinical Professor, Departments of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine, University of Texas Health Sciences Center, San Antonio, Texas.  He provides consultation services to editorial boards of several medical journals and has been author or co-author of numerous medical articles, abstracts and book chapters. MG Dire is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
